I’m taking a sci-fi/speculative fiction class and my professor had us read “Here Come the Janes”, a short story in Sconiers’ book Escape from Beckyville: Tales of Race, Hair and Rage.
Without giving away too much, the plot in “Janes” follows Thessie, a black woman living in West L.A. who begins the story by saying that someone got it into their heads that black women’s hair contains blood and magic and that drives the white woman crazy trying to get to it. Thessie ends up hightailing it to Inglewood, along with other black women, and they plan a coup.
I wasn’t super into reading sci-fi/speculative fiction but bless my woke professor for assigning this author to read (she only assigned non-mainstream woman or PoC writers) because a door has been opened. Check her out!
