Coldplay dropped the video for “Hymn For The Weekend” today. While the video showcases just how beautiful India can be to outsiders, such as myself, it stills screams cultural appropriation.

Coldplay and even Beyonce, do not get a pass on something like this. What it comes down to is privileged folks playing dress up during a festival that is viewed as religious to some folks.

As much as I want to reference the fact that parts of Africa have fashion, makeup, and henna designs similar to that found in South Asian cultures, it would be a grossly incorrect comparison, as the video is based in India and around a Hindu festival. Nowhere in the video would you find any reference to any African culture.

If they really wanted to showcase the Holi festival and on a larger scale India, they should have just let Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor (who is already featured in the video) be the star of the video while Coldplay and Beyonce just be nothing but vocals you hear.
