- Nobel Laureate and Pulitzer Winner Professor Toni Morrison

Dean Baquet gives Douthat, Stephens, Brooks, and Sullivan free reign with their “quiet, polite” racism & misogyny like nobody ever heard of Martin Niemöller.

Don’t get me started on Jonathan Weisman (who by dint of his self-identified surname alone ought to know better unless he just never bothered to go to history class). He hasn’t had to relinquish his position as Deputy Editor of the Washington bureau or even issue a public apology after he made this execrable mess just last week, has he?

Adam Jentleson – senior staffer for Harry Reid when he was Senate Majority Leader (D) & MSNBC contributor - and Joan Walsh – CNN contributor whom MSNBC released when she stood up for marginalized people apparently one time more than the network ownership could comfortably stomach - made public announcements they had cancelled their subscriptions last night.

Yet another blue-checked, NYT-owned (-leased?) white doood on the now-notoriously tone-deaf editorial staff stirred more sludge this morning on social media, sniffing at readers who objected to what he dismissively minimized as readers’ failure to be “generous about human fallibility” and further minimizing their distress at the NYT’s gross and repeated butchery of their coverage of this cultural moment with the insultingly patronizing “the headline was fixed. People make mistakes”.

Other commenters rebutted his stunning cultural myopia more concisely than my brain could manage after reading that

Most people I read who objected to the grotesque false equivalence of the “unity v. racism” headline also made mention of the ceaseless 2016 coverage of HILLARY’S EMAILS that simultaneously somehow failed to observe that 45’s documented racism going back to 1976 disqualified him for White House occupancy from Day One under the terms of the same Constitution he swore to uphold (did anyone else expect that Bible to burst into flames the minute he laid his hand on it?) – and pursuant to the terms of the same Articles that impeached Andrew Johnson.

Those people also made mention of the grievous “FBI Find No Links Between Trump Campaign and Russia” mischaracterization for which the outlet has yet to apologize, even after Director Mueller’s testimony before House Judiciary and Intelligence (so even under this seemingly unending deluge of evidence of criminality and welcoming of help with election fixing by hostile powers effected by the Trump Campaign and its arguable accomplices, “faulty memory” of the entirety of editorial and ownership offices does not suffice as an excuse at this point).

But they still read as though they might not have gotten to this line in the “UNITY V. RACISM” UCF League-sounding miscarriage:

“Those who sympathize with the white nationalist ideology but who deplore the violence …”

Um.

Did all the editors there fail political science?

Do they not read their own columnists who lay out all too clearly, in Reverend Dr Martin Luther King’s words, what the end’game’ of white nationalism actually is?

Of course, I’m troubled by their demonstrated reluctance to promote or even seek the opinion of scholars of color on the topic even as they have the most empirical as well as scholarly authority on the subject matter … and even as they trot out a minimal (and non-proportionally representative) number of scholars of color as their “Look – Diversity!” hires much as major entertainment studios invite journalists of color to the premieres and then actively keep them from interviewing participating talent on the red carpet.

Not that that is a media failure specific to the NYT – major media outlets prophylactically refuse to even consider minority candidates without a sheaf of Ivy League or equivalent lettered credentials, when it is rumored that Chuck Todd – “both-sider”ist and white nationalist apologist host of Meet the Press AND Meet the Press daily – doesn’t even have a college degree.

Here’s a thing I know: There is research that the more sheltered & potentially barricaded that persons – any person, any editor – become, by dint of their accumulated wealth and social position, the progressively less empathetic they become to the systemic plights of others less privileged / more marginalized, however grim those plights, to whatever degree authority-imposed, and however unconscionable - unless those same persons take active steps to stanch the progression of their callousness.

It is also unsettlingly clear, at least to me, that there are way too many people clinging to what they perceive is the comparative economic advantage their white privilege provides who don’t yet understand that the majority fascists masquerading as state and Congressional “Republicans” continue stealing from them under specific cover of the propaganda of that same presumed privilege if they don’t already belong to the one percent - and if they don’t put those two things together faster (i.e., “theft by dupe”) the richest 1% of Americans will own 100% of the nation’s wealth in 33 years.

The rage of those white people who feel their under-earning and underachievement can be blamed on immigrants and minorities is deliberately stoked by the most oligarchic of white people who actively seek to misdirect that blame by deliberately hoarding, withholding, and stealing resources from the white people so enraged. It’s called “sadopopulism”, as coined by Professor Timothy Snyder, and anyone unfamiliar with it needs to look at his work on the matter – as well as his ongoing series on authoritarianism, since those two issues remain glaringly obviously conjoined to anyone who musters the will to look.

Perhaps when the ownership and editorial ambassadors of the ongoing Vichy travesty at NYT are Googling through their universes for their mentions – as men who show they believe the “best” way to deal with their anxiety over their own perceived inadequacy is to exert their best efforts to suborn other people have a tendency to do – something here might catch their collective, currently pandering eye and give pause.

Those of us whom the Professor left behind remain under citizen’s obligation to … alert the media, I guess.

And then to lead by example as we continue to take action, should they refuse to so do.

ETA: So something broke out in the thread while I was doing something else - can’t turn your back on white privilege for a minute, apparently - and I want to restate my comment, in my thread, for the record in case some selective deletin’ goes on (as I have seen more than once when white folks wander into POC-supportive spaces and rattle on without a lot of consciousness about where they might be or even what the wider context might be for their remarks, which right now takes a special kind of obliviousness):

Hey, Violet? -

No space is the space for even a hint at that pejorative stereotype — but this space in particular, especially given that I put this thread up on TSB to avoid precisely that (AND in a thread where an elder was being honored, and I let your semi-threadjack go prior to this in the wider discussion of racism and Professor Morrison’s response to it), is the opposite of whatever space that would be.

I see you all are no longer having a discussion, so I’ll assume that’s the end of it, but I didn’t see this this morning because I was working on something else, and I wanted the identification of the ABW stereotype and a clear statement that that is not okay here right out where everybody can see it.

Thanks.
