The Mueller Report was released in somewhat redacted form by the Department of Justice on March 22, 2019. 6 months later, on September 24, 2019, Nancy Pelosi announced a formal impeachment inquiry would be initiated by the House of Representatives. I’ve been thinking about that 180-ish days that we lived thru in between the release of that 442 page report (which outlined, in two volumes, a mountain of unethical, shady, immoral, and ultimately illegal behavior by the President and his campaign, staff, and administration) and the stately announcement by the 3rd in line to the presidency that these behaviors could no longer be ignored (which contained this declaration “The president must be held accountable...No one is above the law”).
What changed from March to September? What makes the Ukraine scandal such an emergency and the Russia scandal not as much of one? Also, if you’re about to answer that second in question in earnest, be prepared to explain the difference between the two - from where I sit, they’re the same scandal with the same people being paid and instructed to do the same illegal things to ultimately benefit the same foreign power. I can’t stress that enough. IT IS THE SAME SHIT, just remixed. The only material changes are the targets (Biden instead of Hillary), the guys running point (Giuliani, Pompeo, Mulvaney instead of Flynn, Manafort, & Stone), and the attempt to thwart policy/legislation of the US (freezing $300M in military aid instead of lifting Russian sanctions). Stone’s trial starts in less than 3 weeks, btw.
There’s this idea, floated by the left and right alike, that all of the calls for impeachment by folks like Maxine Waters, Al Green, AOC, Rashida Tlaib, Ayanna Pressley, Ilhan Omar, etc., were ‘emotional’, ‘illogical’, ‘immature’, ‘not strategic’, ‘unserious’, ‘from the fringe of the party’, ‘too divisive’, etc. etc. etc. Of course, the move by Pelosi, the adult in the room, to start doing shit in earnest 6 months after the fact, has been hailed by “liberal” outlets across the board for being ‘pragmatic’, ‘competent’, ‘deliberate’, ‘measured’, and ‘patient’. This post by Raineyb1013 and this comment by Rooo already perfectly laid the hypocrisy out, so I just want to reiterate how fraudulent the narrative is right now around even the idea of impeachment, let alone the execution of it.
I saw a tweet last night trying to explain away the delay, basically stating that Pelosi was ‘just waiting until she had the perfect hand [for impeachment]’ and I wanted to throw my phone out the window. The fuck does that even mean? This perfect hand Pelosi supposedly has today - it’s the same one she had in March, just more of the same. So, to messily extend the analogy, this is like having four Wild Draw 4s in your hand somehow during a game of Uno, and yet you wait to use them until you get some more Skips and Draw Twos and shit. Like, you got em. There’s enough now to move. Just do it. You won, my guy. How much more do you need? Oh, it’s just being patient, and deliberate, and whatnot? My bad, don’t mean to rush you.
Pelosi - Please take your time while people die at the border, immigrants are deported without court hearings, Trump tells your fellow congresswomen to “go back to where they came from” and calls Baltimore “a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess”, lies about the path of destruction for Hurricanes, argues before the Supreme Court that transgender workers are not protected by a ban on workplace discrimination, says Jews who vote for your party are disloyal or unintelligent, calls himself “the Chosen One”, instructs aides to use eminent domain to take private land in order to begin building his wall (will issue pardons if they break any laws), hikes tariffs on Chinese goods without any consideration of the impacts, threatens tariffs on Mexican goods if they don’t “stop” immigration, declares he has the right to solicit foreign interference in future elections, floats the idea of serving more than 2 terms, threatens to close the U.S./Mexico border if they “don’t stop the massive amounts of drugs” coming to the U.S., says he’s the best thing that’s ever happened to Puerto Rico even though they are “one of the most corrupt places on Earth”, threatens sanctuary cities with the release of ‘thousands of illegal aliens’ (presumably so those undocumented folks will kill them?), backs Saudi Arabia as they commit war crimes in Yemen, proposes to do nothing about gun control if the NRA will support him in the next election, takes photo ops in hospitals with mass shooting victims, proposes meeting with the Taliban at Camp David around the 9/11 anniversary, ignores a bajillion subpoenas, orders witnesses not to testify, tries to deceive the Supreme Court in order to get a citizenship question added to the 2020 census, expresses interest in buying a whole ass country, orders US companies to stop doing business in China, tweets a high-resolution (likely top secret) aerial image of a failed Iranian missile launch, etc. etc. etc.
That’s just in the 6 months between Mueller and Pelosi’s announcement. It’s not even a complete list of the fuckery, just what I could remember. How many people had to endure tremendous pain, if not outright die, before she acted? What was her number here? Whose pain matters? Did Pelosi only move because Trump went after a close friend, former colleague that people generally liked? Again, whose pain matters? At what point does patience start to resemble paralysis? Is Pelosi incompetent? At what point does incompetence and malice stop having a distinction worth noting? When black voices cry out, it’s not serious. When white voices solemnly speak, it’s the most serious of all. Nothing is more privileged than patience. Nothing is more bi-partisan or fundamentally American than telling black people to lower their voices and calm down.
