I was on the Leslie Jones train - she’s abstaining from voting in most categories because only ONE category has a black nominee
And the Cynthia Erivo train - I’ve never been an Oscar nominee but I have been “the only one” in the room, and more than once
And then I heard Regina King interview that she is directing a feature called One Night In Miami and it’s about Cassius Clay and Malcolm X and another pair of iconic figures just spent talking – and to quote Amber Ruffin, I said
So I figured time would be well spent bringing attention to people doing projects who deserve more attention than they’ve been getting. I’ve been watchig a documentary on the black ballerinas who performed in the 1930s - and I’ll keep saying it - the talent has always been there, their exclusion is a deliberately crafted illusion — it’s a matter of people doing brilliant work getting the recognition (with all that means) that they deserve.
Fashions this evening will be from both Oscars and last night’s Independent Spirit Awards.
